Patent Attorney determines potential of granting patents on inventions or trademarks, and monitors possibility of infringement. Responsible for preparing and filing patent applications and trademark registrations, litigating pending applications and registrations, and reporting possible violations. Being a Patent Attorney prosecutes violations of organization's registrations and/or patents. Requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Additionally, Patent Attorney requires admittance to a state bar. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Patent Attorney work is closely managed. - Drafting, preparing and prosecuting U.S. patent applications.
- Working to resolve any questions or objections of USPTO patent examiners regarding applications.
- Identifying primary incentive concepts from discussions with inventors.
- Advising internal R&D departments in patent matters, including monitoring activities of competitors.
- Ensuring any new technical development is free from third parties’ rights.
- Research and determine proper USPTO procedures for addressing prosecution matters.
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school with license to practice law in at least one U.S. state
- 4-year degree in a hard science, including physics, chemistry, computer science or mathematics or in an engineering discipline, including electrical or computer
- Graduate degree preferred
- 1-2 years’ experience in drafting U.S. patent applications and prosecuting patent applications before the USPTO
- Technical experience in at least one of:
- Hardware engineering of optics, fiber optics, laser diodes, electronics; and
- Data science and analysis, such as statistical modeling, simulation, mathematical morphology in image and data analysis, and related software architecture
- Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
- Strong and demonstrated technical writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to learn new subject matter in a self-directed manner
