  • Position Summary: The Organizing and Policy Coordinator position oversees our three current Interest Groups (Care of Creation, Immigration, and Seeking Racial Justice) while promoting justice education, advocacy, and action on the part of the Sisters, Associates, and staff regarding current issues of justice, peace, and integrity of creation, particularly in regard to state and local policy in Kansas.

    Impelled by the love of Christ, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, a Roman Catholic congregation of women religious, offer every loving service in their power to meet the critical needs of God’s people. Established in 1858 in Kansas, the Sisters of Charity live their mission in the spirit of their founders St. Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac, and Mother Xavier Ross. The Sisters, as Gospel-centered women, share a tradition of responding to the needs of the time, ministering to the vulnerable and marginalized and caring for the fragile Earth. They share their mission in partnership and collaboration with those committed to working for peace and justice.

    Responsibilities

    Community Organizing:

    • Execute programming that offers a consistent opportunity for supporters to take action
    • Responsible for managing and supporting interest groups including organizing meetings, providing research, as well as project management and execution
    • Planning and implementing advocacy, action, and communications via letters, phone calls, and meetings with elected officials along with other stakeholders on critical justice concerns of the SCL Congregation as part of the JPIC Office team
    • Grassroots organizing to continue growing a wider network of supporters and advocates willing to engage in advocacy

    Legislative/Policy:

    • In consultation with the JPIC Lead Coordinator: Helps set the direction for advocacy on local and state issues;
    • Designs a comprehensive annual legislative agenda for the Kansas Legislature with regard to the JPIC Office vision and the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth community priorities
    • Registers as a lobbyist in the state of Kansas and participates in the legislative session
    • Keeps current on pending local and state-wide legislation
    • Attends meetings with elected officials at the local, state, and national levels as needed

    As part of the JPIC Office Team:

    • Collaborates with the Lead Coordinator of the JPIC Office to prepare, submit, implement, and monitor the annual departmental budget.
    • As part of the JPIC Office team, offers presentations, workshops, and reflection opportunities focused on justice, Catholic Social Teaching, the congregation’s corporate stances, and peace-making skills.
    • Ability to present information in a public forum
    • Research and work on initiatives in Leavenworth County and surrounding areas
    • Participates in ongoing professional development, including occasional travel to conferences
    • Collaborates with the Communication Director to ensure coverage of justice endeavors.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Sociology, Business Administration, Theology or similar
    • 3-5 years of progressive professional experience in political campaigns, community organizing, program development, advocacy, or public policy
    • Strong commitment to and demonstrated passion for justice
    • Knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching
    • Knowledge of the current political and movement landscape in Kansas
    • Willingness to learn or understand the congregation’s mission and charism
    • Ability to: Analyze and effectively articulate the justice agenda;
    • Motivate others on behalf of justice issues and concerns;
    • Engage others in active dialogue and reflective thinking;
    • Present effectively to diverse populations
    • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication, and technology skills
    • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
    • Openness to varied points of view and cultures
    • Sensitivity to language as it impacts race, gender, and culture
    • Ability to manage flexible hours
    • Occasional, local & national travel (10%-25%)
    • Strong self-motivation and decision-making ability

    Physical Activity

    • Carrying, bending, stooping, grasping, standing, twisting, sitting, lifting, walking, filing
    • Communicating with Sisters, Associates, and co-workers via face-to face, phone, and other technological means
    • Push, pull, lift, or carry up to 20 pounds occasionally; generally sedentary
