Mechanical Engineering Manager manages the design and analysis of mechanical components and systems to meet specified requirements and standards. Provides technical direction to team members in designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems or components. Being a Mechanical Engineering Manager utilizes CAD software and other design and modeling tools to plan, develop, and improve mechanical parts or components. Oversees prototype testing to evaluate the performance, reliability, and safety of mechanical systems and reviews data and analysis to develop improvements. Additionally, Mechanical Engineering Manager manages engineering projects through their entire lifecycle, including cost and requirement analysis, scheduling, and coordinating activities with stakeholders. Establishes programs to support training, process improvements, and best practices and protocols. Leads initiatives with other departments to identify potential products and projects. Stays abreast of new technologies and processes and implements changes to improve the organization's mechanical engineering capabilities. Requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Typically reports to a director. The Mechanical Engineering Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Mechanical Engineering Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     The School of Engineering Technology at the University of Maine seeks an experienced mechanical engineer or engineer in a closely-related discipline to join our faculty on August 1, 2024 as an academic-year Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET). The successful applicant will develop and teach machining- and manufacturing-related courses at all levels of the curriculum and will be open to using teaching styles that reach students who otherwise might not choose engineering.


    The Mechanical Engineering Technology program at the University of Maine seeks to prepare graduates to make a difference in our world through product innovations and applications in thermal systems, mechanical design, and manufacturing processes. Our design and build capstone projects demonstrate our students’ successes as well as potential entrepreneurial opportunities for product development.     The MET faculty are dedicated to assuring that all students in the major feel that they belong, and clearly communicating with students the connections between engineering principles and professional practice. Our program prioritizes student professionalism, teamwork, and collegiality as modeled by the faculty. MET faculty members engage in service to the discipline and the community, as well as professional society activities, ETAC/ABET accreditation efforts, recruitment, student advising, and University committees. The MET department also encourages and supports faculty member pursuits in scholarship, including professional consulting and research, such as collaborations with University of Maine’s Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMC). The AMC is a product development and solutions organization that maintains a dedicated full-time staff of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, machinists, and technicians in a 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art design and manufacturing facility.     Qualifications:

    Required:

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely-related discipline from an ABET accredited program (or an equivalent program satisfactory for Professional Engineer licensure).
    • Must have been employed post-graduation for at least three years in a full-time, permanent position as a mechanical engineer in an area such as machining, manufacturing, tooling, prototyping, and/or design.

    Preferred:

    • Recent professional experience with subtractive machining, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and manufacturing.
    • Recent professional experience in computer-aided drafting and design (CADD), computer-aided machining (CAM), and computer numerical controls (CNC).
    • Recent professional experience in forming manufacturing (e.g., injection molding, vacuum molding, casting, etc.) and/or additive manufacturing (e.g., bound metal deposition, directed energy deposition, powder bed fusion).
