Mechanical Engineering Manager manages the design and analysis of mechanical components and systems to meet specified requirements and standards. Provides technical direction to team members in designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems or components. Being a Mechanical Engineering Manager utilizes CAD software and other design and modeling tools to plan, develop, and improve mechanical parts or components. Oversees prototype testing to evaluate the performance, reliability, and safety of mechanical systems and reviews data and analysis to develop improvements. Additionally, Mechanical Engineering Manager manages engineering projects through their entire lifecycle, including cost and requirement analysis, scheduling, and coordinating activities with stakeholders. Establishes programs to support training, process improvements, and best practices and protocols. Leads initiatives with other departments to identify potential products and projects. Stays abreast of new technologies and processes and implements changes to improve the organization's mechanical engineering capabilities. Requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Typically reports to a director. The Mechanical Engineering Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Mechanical Engineering Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     This role will be onsite at SMC's US Headquarters in Noblesville, IN.

    PURPOSE

    A fully competent professional in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of the assignments; such as the ability to plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Must be able to lead the department toward its goals, ensure that all members are productive, resolve problems as they arise, and execute administrative duties as needed.

    Essential Duties

    • Creativity: Innovation of new inter and intra-departmental processes and or company-level processes
    • Reliability: Be available to complete tasks/projects/support subordinates as required by internal/external customer requirements.
    • Communicate with various departments, external customers, or individuals directly associated with assigned projects. (Verbal and Written)Occasional travel, customer projects, trips to Japan.
    • Take verbal and/or written directions on projects, training, department/company policies, or department/company objectives.
    • Provide verbal and or written results of tasks/projects, presentations, or requests to various persons during the execution of tasks/projects, appropriate for the intended audience.
    • Produce the end product of requested tasks in the form of components, assemblies, drawings, data files, proposals, reports, or presentations.
    • Define, maintain, and report variance against assigned cost center budgets.
    • Maintain regular project review meetings with reports to update on project status and drive timely completion of projects.
    • Analyze and maintain an appropriate level of workload for all respective direct reports between projects, specials, floor support, and claims.
    • Innovation of new inter-departmental processes and or company-level processes.
    • Develop and communicate employee reviews that include performance metrics, expected results, and career progression guidelines for promotions.
    • Support a world-class environment that promotes safety, cleanliness, and pride in workmanship.
    • Execute strategy and plans for continuous operational improvements.
    • Develop new design methods and processes that align with the company’s growth and cost targets.
    • Mentor supervisors and engineers in their goals to improve products.
    • Work with manufacturing engineering in the selection of manufacturing best practices and design for manufacturability practices.
    • Record daily activities.
    • Will be assigned tasks for training and development purposes.
    • Other duties, as assigned to support company goals.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Sustained posture in a seated position for prolonged periods
    • Occasional travel, mainly for training purposes, customer projects, trips to Japan
    • Occasional physical demand of moving or rearranging files and file storage boxes, and or product
    • Occasional physical demand of moving and relocating production/lab equipment in a production environment may expose the employee to noise, heat, cold, dust, oil, grease, and/or coolants; and may require wearing Personal Protective Equipment

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or similar discipline
    • Preferred Master's Degree in Engineering or similar discipline
    • Minimum 10 years’ experience, with at least 5 years of in a supervisory/management role
    • Complete understanding of the company’s operations
    • Good oral and written skills
    • Ability to deal with internal and external customers tactfully and in a professional manner
