Lineman constructs, maintains, and repairs overhead and underground transmission lines. Performs site preparation tasks, including digging holes or trenches, installing anchors, climbing poles, and using equipment like digger derricks, aerial lifts, pulling and tensioning equipment, forklifts, and dump trucks. Being a Lineman installs wire and cable. Follows all safety regulations and procedures. Additionally, Lineman work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Requires a valid Driver's License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Lineman works under moderate supervision.   • Job Summary

    This position is responsible for the performance of skilled maintenance and repair of the electrical distribution and transmission systems in accordance with standard trade practices. Work is frequently performed with high-tension cables and under unfavorable weather conditions, requiring skill and care to protect the employee's life and the lives of others. Most of the work entails routine construction. Incumbents may be assigned to special trouble jobs in which some independent work occurs.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Include the following and other duties as assigned:

    • Repairs or replaces defective power lines and auxiliary equipment; splices and reconnects broken ends of fallen wires to insulators or installs new replacement wires.
    • Repairs equipment such as cross arms, braces and street lights; replaces burnt fuses, broken lightning arresters and insulators.
    • Replaces defective poles by erecting new poles alongside condemned pole and transferring cables and other auxiliary equipment.
    • May test voltage load on transformers, makes minor adjustments to transformers to either step-up or step-down voltage; replaces defective transformers.
    • Usually works on energized lines involving electrocution hazard and requires caution and use of safety devices.
    • Locates trouble in primary and secondary lines; replaces fuses in transformers; clears short circuits in lines.

    Possesses thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in line construction and maintenance work. Thorough knowledge of principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems and ability to apply to work problems. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of adequate and necessary safety precautions. Thorough knowledge of first aid, including CPR.  Skilled in the use and care of line tools and testing equipment. Skilled climber.

    Expresses related facts in a clear, concise, and organized manner; modifies delivery, language, or content to account for the characteristics and needs of the audience; writes clear, concise, and organized documents, and reports addressing complex concepts and facts; provides consultation to others related to the specific project; develops and/or creates informational reports.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts and calculate figures, such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; possesses the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Possesses an advanced ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.    

    Reasoning Ability

    Possesses an advanced ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

    Computer Skills                                           

    Ability to use and understand Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.

    While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. These include close, distant, and color vision. The incumbent is regularly exposed to risks such as wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions, including extreme cold and/or heat; and risk of electrical shock.

    Education and Experience   

    This position requires the following education and experience:                                

    High School Diploma/GED required. Completion of a recognized Journeyman Lineman Apprentice Program required (for external applicants, will accept a minimum of five years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman in the electric utility industry).

    Other Qualifications             

    Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class A with airbrake endorsement required.

    Ability to work flexible hours, as required. Employee is subject to call-outs at all hours of the day and night, on weekends, and holidays, and is expected to report to work when called and to be on standby if it becomes mandatory. Employee must respond to 350 Slaton Street within forty minutes of receiving a call. Employee must maintain a working phone number.
