Life Underwriting Director directs and oversees the life insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups. Responsible for ensuring integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Life Underwriting Director provides coaching to underwriters and assists on more complex applications. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Additionally, Life Underwriting Director typically requires Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certification or Fellow Life Management Institute (FLMI) designation. Typically reports to top management. The Life Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Life Underwriting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. - The underwriting consultant will work directly with field advisors and clients with insurance applications. This position is responsible for underwriting insurance applications within strict guidelines up to $5,000,000 of life insurance face amount and $8000 monthly benefit on disability. Key Responsibilities Review applications from advisors to determine insurability, categorize the risk to determine the appropriate premium and rating class. Review and assess medical and non-medical requirements, partner with medical director, leadership and peers as needed to determine insurability. On average, actively manage case load of 250 plus applications. Direct contact with field to gather financial and medical information on clients, communicate underwriting risk assessment decisions and to assist the field throughout the insurance process. Provide formal mentoring of less experienced underwriters. Co-signing on all policies up to $5,000,000 on life insurance and $8,000.00 monthly benefit on disability amounts for underwriter trainees. Travels to field offices or presents via Web-ex, conference calls, or other available technology for the purposes of coaching, training and relationship building with advisors. Quality assurance reviewing randomly selected cases completed by a specific underwriter that have a higher premium value. Review for appropriate thought process and risk assessment decision and providing coaching and feedback. Required Qualifications Bachelors degree or equivalent 5-7 years relevant experience with Individual Life and/or Disability Underwriting Demonstrated decision making skills. Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated analytical skills. Ability to coach and mentor others.
