Laboratory Manager manages the daily activities of the laboratory. Develops laboratory policies and procedures and issues updates as needed. Being a Laboratory Manager plans and designs experiments. Estimates the time and resources needed to complete projects. Additionally, Laboratory Manager orders and inspects materials and equipment and maintains detailed and accurate inventory of lab supplies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Laboratory Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Laboratory Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Summary
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the VCIPS Core Laboratory, which is housed in both BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities: Directs the administrative, operational, personnel, customer service, financial and programmatic functions. Coordinates technical functions with technical teams. Processes and manages all aspects of the research projects conducted in the laboratory. Plans, prepares, and monitors equipment, operations, and personnel budgets for the department. Ensures that laboratory complies with regulatory guidelines. Keeps abreast of regulatory changes, ensure Quality Assurance and safety compliance with federal regulations and certifying agencies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Effective organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, meet deadlines, and respond to multiple demands as needed.
- Ability to function autonomously and exercise sound judgement while maintaining professional demeanor, confidentiality, and diplomacy.
- Ability to maintain a research laboratory operation.
- Strong supervisory skills
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.
REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:
Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation, required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.
Required Education And/or Experience- Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science and ten years of directly related experience including three years of supervisory experience.
- Experience with experimental procedures.
- Master’s Degree in a biological science and five years of directly related experience including two years of supervisory experience.
- Experience with NIH funded grants and contract studies.
