Instructor - Biology teaches courses in the discipline area of biology. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - Biology provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - Biology typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research.     Classification: PT Faculty

    Status (exempt/non-exempt): Exempt

    Percentage: Part time- Academic Year

    Salary: Dependent upon credentials and experience  

     

    • These courses will be offered Face to Face  for 2024-25 Academic Year.  Fall term starts on September 16, 2024.

    Course detail

     BI101- Biology (4 credits/66clockhours):  Introduces the properties of life, morphology and physiology of cells, cell chemistry, energy transformation, and the basic principles of ecology. Designed as a laboratory science course for non-biology majors. 

    BI102-Biology (4 credits/66clockhours): Presents protein synthesis, cell division, genetics, reproduction and development, and evolution. Designed as a laboratory science course for non-biology majors. The second course of a three-course sequence. 

    BI103-Biology (4 credits/66clockhours): Presents the evolutionary relationships among the kingdoms. Includes a comparison of biological systems across kingdoms. Designed as a laboratory science course for non-biology majors. 

     Lab set up part of the position, with limited assistance from Lab Assistant.

    TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Teaching and Student Success: Instruct students using approved course outcome guides and accurate syllabi. Prepare instructional materials as needed. Meet all assigned classes. Apply the colleges values for teaching and learning. Facilitate learning that applies to students academic and career goals. Meet the curricular needs of students at various learning levels. Encourage mutual responsibility for a supportive learning environment. Provide effective teaching strategies in an environment that encourages student and instructor interaction. Actively engage students in the learning process. Encourage creative and critical thinking. Evaluate and grade student progress and systematically assess the program using meaningful indicators to assure currency, improve teaching and learning strategies, and achieve stated student learning outcomes for all students, including underrepresented students and first-generation college students. Maintain accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and scholastic progress. Assess the achievement of student learning outcomes at the course, program, and institutional level.

    Professional Responsibilities: Work collaboratively with colleagues and community partners. Interact with students, staff, and administration in a professional manner. Assure effective two-way communication at all levels of responsibility. Engage in a reasonable amount of student contact outside of instruction to respond to questions and to resolve course-related problems. Complete required college trainings.  

    Additionally, Part-time faculty are invited and encouraged to participate in professional development and other institutional work (such as attending department meetings, engaging in committee work, and advancing shared governance).   

    Compliance Comply with published College Policies and Procedures. Maintain a safe learning and working environment by following all laws, policies and procedures established by the College and through state and federal oversight (such as OSHA and Title IX). Maintain College safety standards in work areas; ensure that students are trained in good safety practices; and make reasonable efforts to ensure that students follow good safety practices.

    Other duties as needed: Use of media aids, the library, and other resources, as applicable.

    Requirements

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Master’s degree in the Microbiology or Masters degree in related area plus 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in Microbiology.

    Master’s degrees in the following areas should be regarded as Masters degrees in subject area.

    • Anatomy, Animal Behavior, Animal Sciences, Biology, Botany, Doctor of Chiropractic, Medicine (DC), Doctor of Dental Science      (DDS or DMD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Ecology, Education/Science Education (assuming 30 graduate credits in any of the other subjects), Entomology, ESR (Environmental Science and Resources), Evolution/Evolutionary Biology, Fisheries, Forestry, Genetics, Marine Biology, Medical Doctor (MD), Molecular and Cellular Biology, Naturopathic Doctor (ND), Physiology, Plant Sciences, Wildlife Biology, Zoology

    A part-time instructor without a Masters may be approved if they have 30 quarter hours of graduate credit in the subject area. Masters students should anticipate completing their degree within 6 months of hire. Provisional appointments for Masters students will be for a period of 6 months. 


    WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Light physical exertion with occasional, moderate lifting, bending, stooping, and pulling. 
    • Ability to carry equipment and tools of moderate weight, using arms and hands. 
    • Mobility to move between offices, classrooms, and floors. 
    • Ability to hear the conversational voice and effectively communicate responses. 
    • Visual acuity to read and evaluate student work and complete and maintain various types of records. 
    • Assignment will include teaching at all OCCC locations and may involve field work conducted at various organizations within Lincoln County. Travel between College sites and other locations may be required as needed. 
    • Periodic travel and overnight stays outside of Lincoln County may be required for meetings, professional development, and other purposes.

    • Faculty positions are represented by the collective bargaining agreement between American Federation of Teachers and Oregon Coast Community College.
    • Part time faculty have term to term appointments. New part time faculty will be evaluated during their first term of employment.
