Head Nurse - Obstetrics directs nursing service activities for assigned patients in the delivery room and birthing units. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and obstetrics staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of obstetrics patient clinical records, and writes reports on obstetrics room staff performance and services rendered. Being a Head Nurse - Obstetrics maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Additionally, Head Nurse - Obstetrics requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Obstetrics manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Obstetrics typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required.     In collaboration with a physician, diagnoses and treats certain acute or chronic health conditions in specific populations.
     
    Job Responsibilities
    • Obtains patient history and performs assessment via observation, interview, and examination.
    • Orders, performs, and interprets diagnostic studies.
    • May be required to perform preventative health assessments, screenings, immunizations, and care.
    • Provides direct treatment and management of health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources.
    • Provides counseling and education of patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options, and community resources.
    • Provides care in the context of promoting age and culture-appropriate informed choices, shared decision- making, and the right to self-determination.
    • Provides accurate and timely documentation of assessment and patient care plan.
    • May coordinate the registration functions including collecting and entering demographic, insurance, employer information, and co-payments.
    Qualifications
    • Master's degree or higher in Nursing required upon hire
    • No experience required
    • RN - Licensed as a Registered Nurse. Eligible to practice nursing in the State of Kentucky required upon hire AND
    • APRN - Licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the state of Kentucky required upon hire AND
    • APRN - National certification from American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) required upon hire OR
    • APRN - National certification from American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACCN) required upon hire OR
    • APRN - National certification from National Certification for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing Specialties (NCCCOGN) required upon hire OR
    • APRN - National certification from Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) required upon hire OR
    • APRN - National certification from American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) required upon hire OR
    • APRN - National certification as Neonatal Nurse Practitioner from National Certification Corporation (NCC) required upon hire
