    RESPEC, an internationally recognized engineering consulting company, has an opening for a temporary part-time, entry-level geologist in the Mining & Energy business unit in our Grand Junction, Colorado, office.

    Job Description

    The geologist will be expected to work 2–3 weeklong assignments in the field. Work schedule in the field is 10–12 hours per day, 6-7 days per week. When not in the field, a comfortable workspace will be provided as needed in our Grand Junction office. Office work may include database management, assisting with technical report writing, and conducting research on RESPEC projects. This position will not star prior to July 1, 2024 and is temporary part-time.

    Responsibilities:

    The primary activities for this position include the following:

    • Lithology and geotechnical logging of drill core
    • Selecting samples for assay and preparing the selected samples
    • Cutting core using a 10-inch tile saw
    • Occasionally visiting the drill rig.

    The successful candidate will be trained to measure and record Rock Quality Designation (RQD) and other geotechnical logging parameters, to safely cut drill core, properly select and prepare samples, and understand the importance of implementing quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures. Additional training will include digital logging software (WellCAD, LogPlot, etc). The geologist will work under the direct supervision of experienced RESPEC geology staff.

    The candidate will directly support RESPEC’s service to clients engaged in the exploration for industrial and critical minerals throughout North America.

    Qualifications

    • At a minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in geology, or an advanced degree in geological, mechanical, mining, civil engineering, or related field
    • 0 to 5 years of experience as a resource, exploration, mine development, and/or production geologist
    • Possess a thorough understanding of sedimentary geology and the various aspects of volcaniclastic sedimentation
    • Ability to identify and properly describe different sedimentary, evaporite, and volcaniclastic rocks in core specimens (e.g., claystone, sandstone, halite, tuff, and ash) as well as structural features (e.g., joints, fault gauge, and slickensides)
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, and Outlook)
    • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and effective writing and oral communication skills and be self-motivated.

    Additional Information

    Compensation: Typical hourly wage for this position is $26-32/hour. Hourly wage depends on education and experience, plus statutory insurance requirements.
