    GCI's Facilities Engineer I is responsible for providing rapid and accurate information about the design and safe installation of AC and DC power systems, power distribution, battery backup systems, and cabling systems in support of telecommunications systems. Support engineering and operations teams in their effort to maintain and upgrade HVACs, Generators, UPS units, Grounding networks, Rectifiers, and Inverters. Ensure adherence to Central Office Engineering and Installation Standards to ensure efficient space utilization, and properly installed facility cable tray, racks, auxiliary support iron work, and earthquake bracing.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT ALL LEVELS:
    • Participate in the implementation of new installations, upgrades, and/or changes to existing company facilities.
    • Review and finalize detailed cost estimates, designs, material lists, installation packages, and test and maintenance procedures.
    • Design and specify installation methods.
    • Provide engineering technical support, troubleshooting and repair recommendations.
    • Provide cost control and cost savings.
    • Mentor junior engineers and stay current with applicable codes & developing technology.

      • Knowledge of typical industry standard documentation and design criteria with progressive experience in the installation of Central Office systems.

      • Basic working knowledge of electrical/electronic systems so that detailed technical problems are dealt with in a logical manner. 
      • Engineering analytical skills for calculating, evaluating, comparing, interpreting, and organizing telecommunication infrastructure and system installation projects to design and build highly reliable facilities infrastructure.
      • General knowledge of telecommunications facility installation for Transport, Internet, Microwave, Cellular, Satellite, LAN/WAN, Switch, and customer premise equipment.
      • Knowledge of the following facilities and equipment: satellite earth stations including Microwave and VSAT, Central Office infrastructure and support equipment, Central Office Transport, Power and Grounding equipment, DACS systems, fiber optic SONET systems, high-speed distributed data network equipment and installation.
      • Knowledge of the proper use of trade hand and power tools.
    • SAFETY & SECURITY - Supports a safe work environment by following all workplace safety rules and guidelines; complies with applicable Security policies and procedures.
    • Proficient computer skills (Visio, AutoCAD, Acrobat) and MS Office knowledge (e.g., Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel) to complete job duties effectively.

    Grade: E05

    Additional Job Requirements:

    This is an entry level engineering position for the degreed engineer. The position requires competence at performing engineering calculations for further review by senior staff. Completes tasks on time and within budget.   Active participation in the implementation of new installations and upgrades or changes to existing facilities by reviewing, editing, and creating Installation packages, performing pre-installation reviews, documenting new and existing installations, performing installation package quality assurance standards adherence.

    Essential Duties:

     

    Under the direction of more senior engineers prepare detailed cost estimates, designs, material lists, installation packages, and test & maintenance procedures resulting in completely documented facilities based on industry standards. Designs and Specifies installation methods, materials, and layouts for cable racks, Cable tray runways, lighting, floor plans and rack layouts, M&C equipment, HVAC, Backup battery, Backup generator, UPS, Inverter, AC and DC power systems and distribution, for various local and geographically remote telecommunications Central Office, Internet, Microwave, Cellular, Satellite, Transport, LAN/WAN, Switch, and customer premise facilities, including commercial building power distributions and central office grounding systems.

     

      Produce estimates of installation labor time and materials, coordinate materials and supplies, ordering, and site installation support.

     

    Additional Competencies:

    • Must have a basic understanding of all aspects of telephony power and power distribution systems for central offices, customer premises, wire centers, and remote village earth stations. 
    • Remains current on technical advances in the field of telephony central office equipment installation engineering, and DC and AC power systems.
    • Experience in telecommunications Central Office design and installation, quality assurance, and standards concepts.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Required: *A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis

    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Telecommunications, or related field. *
    • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience as a Telecommunications Technician, Installer, Field Engineer, or related background. *

    Preferred: 

    • Telecommunications experience.  
    • Relevant telecom industry or job specific certifications.

    DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

    • This position requires driving a company-owned vehicle, company provided vehicle, or a personal vehicle on behalf of the company. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete Defensive Driving course. Must be able to drive when in remote communities and operate ATV-style vehicles if necessary.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS:  
    • 75% office based. 
    • 25% travel to remote locations and after-hours work requiring flexible schedules, late night or early morning cutover support.
    • Work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage.
    • Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment.
    • Travel in rural Alaska and some outside work required. 
    • Must be able to occasionally work in cramped spaces and at heights, primarily inside and outside of remote company and customer facilities. 
    • Ability to tolerate temperature and weather extremes (fumes and odors, dust, low light conditions, intermittent weather).
    • Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.
    • Physical agility and effort sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively.
    • Ability to make valid judgments and decisions. 
    • Available to work additional time on weekends, holidays, before or after normal work hours when necessary. 
    • Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers.
    • Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.
