Responsibilities:
The Educator at the Hilliard Art Museum is responsible for developing and implementing educational programs for the campus and community. The core audiences that this position works directly with include UL Lafayette students, faculty, and staff, K-12 students and teachers, families, and community members of all ages. A key goal of this position is to increase the use and impact of the museum as a resource, especially by the university.
Duties:
-Develop interdisciplinary learning and research opportunities in collaboration with faculty and students. This includes designing tours and programs centered around faculty and student research, course goals, and assignments. This requires strong research skills, curiosity, and an ability to synthesize information and make connections across disciplines.
-Mentor the museum’s master’s-level and doctoral-level graduate assistants. Train them in best practices related to inclusive gallery teaching, Visual Thinking Strategies, community-minded partnerships, object-based research, and writing.
-Seek out and nurture inter-departmental partnerships across campus. Create activities and participate in campus events and outreach.
-Work with the Curator of Exhibitions to identify key themes and questions presented within the exhibitions.
-Manage all aspects of scheduling tours. This includes responding to tour requests, adding tours to the museum calendars, coordinating with teaching artists and volunteers if needed, and communicating with the Store and Visitor Services Manager about group size and needs.
-Design age-appropriate curriculum and gallery experiences for K-12 tour groups. Have an awareness of Louisiana State Standards.
-Manage monthly programs like Yoga in the Galleries and Let’s Make Art. Schedule teaching artists, presenters, and/or speakers as needed.
-Take an active role in developing the Programs and Operations Manual for the fiscal year. This includes strategic planning in collaboration with other museum departments.
-Assist with setup and breakdown for events and programs.
-Collaborate with the Curator of Exhibitions, Collection Manager, and Preparator to create interpretive materials including writing and editing text, designing hands-on, and interactive areas.
-Keep track of expenses and manage the budget for all Education Department-related costs.
-Manage paperwork and processes related to the payment of Graduate Assistants, teaching artists, guest speakers, or other Education-related labor.
-Assist with grant writing as needed.
-Assist with evaluation of visitor experience.
-Be actively engaged with campus and local, state, and national professional organizations such as, but not limited to, the UL Lafayette Staff Council, Louisiana Art Education Association, National Art Education Association, and the Association of Museums and Galleries.
