Dean of Undergraduate Programs manages administrative functions of the undergraduate program.     Position Summary
    This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Undergraduate Researcher for the Ag Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University (OSU).

    The Uehling Lab within the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology is seeking a highly motivated Graduate Research Assistant to join our team. The successful candidate will primarily focus on mycology projects, specifically the isolation of fungal cultures from soil samples, followed by DNA extraction for molecular analysis. This position offers a unique opportunity to learn and contribute to cutting-edge research in fungal biology.

    General tasks and duties include supporting laboratory operations by washing dishes, preparing stock solutions and biological media, sterilizing labware and solutions using autoclaves, and maintaining laboratory cleanliness and organization.

    More specific tasks include conducting isolating and cultivating pure fungal cultures, DNA extraction from fungal cultures, managing inventory and viability of cultures, maintaining detailed records of procedures and analyses.

    Position Duties
    • Fungal Culture Isolation: Utilize sterile techniques to isolate fungal cultures from soil samples, including plating on selective media and subculturing. (40%)
    • Molecular Analysis: Conduct DNA extraction from isolated fungal cultures using established protocols. Perform PCR amplification and other molecular techniques as required. (40%)
    • Data Recording and Analysis: Maintain detailed records of experimental procedures, observations, and results. Assist in data analysis and interpretation. (5%)
    • Laboratory Maintenance: Ensure cleanliness and organization of laboratory space. Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies inventory. (5%)
    • Collaboration: Work closely with other lab members and collaborate on ongoing research projects. Participate in lab meetings and discussions. (10%)

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
    • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
    • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
      • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
      • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
      • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
      • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
      • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


    • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

    Additional Required Qualifications
    • Currently enrolled students majoring in Botany, Biology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Microbiology, or closely related programs.
    • Excellent organizational, record keeping, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment after receiving training.
    • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality research standards.
    • Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions effectively and accurately.

    Preferred (Special) Qualifications
    • Course work in mycology, bacteriology, microbiology and or molecular biology.
    • Experience with microbial culture isolation, sterile technique, DNA extraction and sequencing.
