  • DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota.     Business education has a long history at DSU. Launched in 1927 as the Commerce Division of Dickinson Normal School, the academic unit consisted of the Department of Business Administration, Department of Secretarial Arts, and Department of Commerce. In August 2017, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education gave DSU's Department of Business and Management approval to proceed with forming a business school. The International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE) accredited programs are now a part of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship (SoBE). SoBE kicked off its inaugural year by celebrating 90 years of business education at DSU and receiving over 10 national academic awards! In fall 2019, SoBE launched its highly anticipated, first master’s program in entrepreneurship.

    DSU is looking to hire a Dean for the School of Business and Entrepreneurship. The Dean of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship is a senior leadership position responsible for providing strategic direction, academic oversight, and administrative leadership within SoBE at Dickinson State University. This role plays a pivotal role in shaping the business programs, fostering academic excellence, and maintaining a culture of innovation and inclusivity within SoBE. The Dean of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship is expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to academic quality, research, and the professional development of faculty and staff.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • An earned or in-progress terminal degree in a relevant field.
    • All academic degrees from accredited institution(s).
    • A distinguished record of scholarship and teaching.
    • Significant administrative experience in higher education, including experience in academic leadership roles.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Knowledge of accreditation processes and standards.
    • Ability to develop and manage budgets effectively.
    • Proficiency in data analysis and strategic planning.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience as Department Chair and/or other leadership experience within higher education.
    • Significant administrative experience, preferably in higher education.

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    • Academic Leadership
    o Provide visionary leadership to shape the strategic direction of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, ensuring alignment with the institution's mission and goals.
    o Oversee curriculum development, assessment, and continuous improvement of academic programs.
    o Foster a culture of excellence in teaching and learning, emphasizing innovative and student-centered approaches.
    o Serve on or assist with the following committees or accreditation bodies:
    § Provost’s senior leadership team;
    § Graduate Studies Council
    § Academic Affairs Council;
    § University, School committees, task forces, etc. as needed and assigned; and
    § HLC reaccreditation.
    • Faculty and Staff Development
    o Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse and highly qualified faculty and staff.
    o Set rigorous goals for direct reports and conduct annual reviews that result in improved performance by staff and faculty.
    o Promote faculty research, scholarship, and professional development opportunities.
    o Conduct regular, rigorous performance evaluations, mentoring, and support for faculty and staff.
    o Promote diversity and inclusion initiatives within the SoBE, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.
    • Administrative Oversight
    o Manage the SoBE budget(s), resources, and facilities effectively.
    o Oversee the scheduling of courses, classrooms, and resources to optimize program delivery.
    o Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and regulations relevant to business programs.
    o Develop, monitor, and achieve or surpass recruiting, retention, and graduation goals for the School of Business and Entrepreneurship as they align with the institution's objectives.
    o Support efforts to recruit and retain a diverse and robust student body.
    • Teaching
    o Teach assigned course load (6 credits per year).
    o Make appropriate preparations for the semester, including syllabus preparation, preparation of lecture and/or studio materials, preparation of tests and assignments as needed/appropriate, revise course materials when needed, and provide measurable objectives for student performance.
    o Communicate effectively with students.
    o Evaluate and select course materials for classroom activities (remote and/or face-to-face).
    o Engage in professional reading and/or research for self-improvement and effectiveness.
    o Engage in appropriate professional development activities.
    o *This position is considered a senior faculty role, and, therefore, is eligible for promotion in academic rank.
    • Student Success
    o Promote an inclusive and supportive learning environment that fosters student success and retention.
    o Engage with students, address their concerns, and advocate for their needs.
    o Monitor and analyze student outcomes to improve program effectiveness.
    o Develop a retention plan in collaboration with faculty in the academic unit to improve student completion and success.
    • Community Engagement
    o Build and maintain partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and other stakeholders.
    o Represent the SoBE and institution at relevant conferences and events.
    o Collaborate with community leaders and organizations to enhance experiential learning opportunities.
    o Work with local high schools to foster relationships to create pipelines for potential students.
    • Research and Innovation
    o Encourage and support research and innovation in business education.
    o Foster a culture of continuous improvement and evidence-based decision-making.
    o Seek grant opportunities and partnerships to enhance research initiatives.
    o Maintain an innovative approach to course delivery, meeting students where they are.

    COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

    • Salary range of $80,000-89,500/annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience
