John.Carrigan@la.govMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Three years of experience in law enforcement, investigatory work or military intelligence work, one year of which must have been investigatory work while being employed as a commissioned law enforcement officer.SUBSTITUTIONS:College training which included six semester hours per year in law enforcement or criminal justice will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required general experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.A baccalaureate degree or associate degree in law enforcement or criminal justice will substitute for the two years of required general experience only.There is no substitution for the one year of required experience in investigation work while being employed as a commissioned law enforcement officer.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must be eighteen years old at time of application.An applicant will be disqualified if he or she has been convicted of a felony or if there are any indictments or bills of information pending against him or her in which felony charges are included; or if he or she has been convicted within the past three years of hit and run or driving while intoxicated.A drug screen will be administered prior to employment.May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment.Required to attend and pass a Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification school.Some P.O.S.T. certification schools require the passing of a physical examination.NOTE:Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.FUNCTION OF WORK:To conduct criminal, administrative, and regulatory investigations; and conduct surveillance of known and suspected criminal targets for purposes of intelligence gathering and investigation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:General from a Criminal Investigator 4, higher level law enforcement officer.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:None.
LOCATION OF WORK:Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Office of State Inspector General, Department of Environmental Quality.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:Differs from other related investigative jobs by specialization intelligence gathering, or assignment to a federal task force with a law enforcement purpose, or assignment to conduct highly sensitive or complex investigations requiring the application of advanced investigative techniques.
Differs from the Criminal Investigator 1 by the presence of full performance duties at the experienced level.EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.Investigates violations of state criminal laws, conducts administrative investigations and investigations of regulatory violations enforced by the department through statute.
Gathers evidence, prepares warrants, and effects arrests.
Locates and interviews witnesses and testifies in court.
Conducts undercover operations, assumes undercover roles, and conducts physical and technical surveillance.
Prepares necessary reports on investigations.
Makes physical arrests and transports fugitives.
