B
Staff Software Engineer (Backend), Square Credit Card
  • Block
  • Washington, DC FULL_TIME
  • Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

    Job Description

Square Credit Card gives sellers access to a business credit card based on their sales processed through Square, offering credit limits, interest rates, and zero fees to sellers who are often underserved by traditional banks. Square Credit Card makes it easy to manage business expenses right alongside the seller’s business within Square. Unlike other corporate cards, Square Credit Card offers free processing rewards for every purchase which help sellers save money for their business. Plus, sellers will get a sleek, metal card with their business on it that they can feel proud of!

The Square Credit Card team and its partner frontend engineering team together provide the product experience that fuels a seamless end to end card experience for Square sellers. As a staff software engineer on the Square Credit Card Team, you will help us expand access to Square Credit Card for sellers and design features to differentiate our product from other credit cards. You will be responsible for designing, building and managing sophisticated financial systems and highly available services while working with your team peers, cross-functional partners, and adjacent engineering teams. If you love collaboratively delivering elegant software that improves the lives of millions of business owners, we want to work with you!

    You will:

    • Advocate for major initiatives to expand access to Credit Card for our sellers

    • Work with Engineering, Product, and other partners to build software that is clean and well-tested by leveraging cloud technologies

    • Oversee the entirety of your features, including component design, implementation, testing, roll-out and maintenance

    • Partner with web, iOS, android and platform engineers to ship features

    • Work with designers, product managers, data scientists, and other developers to understand our problem space and create elegant solutions

    • Provide mentorship to other engineers to help grow their career through 1-on-1 mentorship, engineering design reviews, and code reviews to improve the skills of the team

    • Become an expert in multiple technical areas of the team, a representative and champion for the team, and a source of insights and wisdom

    • Participate in ongoing training to maintain current knowledge of BSA/AML and perform BSA/AML duties as required by job function

    Qualifications

    You have:

    • BS/BA degree or equivalent experience

    • 8 years of software engineering experience

    • Experience leading complex and large-scale features that require collaboration across engineering team boundaries

    • Experience serving as a technical lead, mentoring other engineers

    • Proficiency in at least one server-side language and an enthusiasm to learn others

    • Strong ownership and execution skills with a focus on delivering remarkable solutions to our sellers

    • Experience working in a customer-focused environment

    • Passion for engineering excellence by making high quality, impactful technical contributions

    • Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with partners across Product, Design, Data Science, Operations among other functions
