  • GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Court Clerk performs tasks related to the administration of the city's municipal court system such as the following: clerical, cashiering, collection, courtroom, and administrative support duties for the Municipal Court by following established policies and procedures based upon Mississippi statutes, rules and local ordinances.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    · Places case files, complaints, warrants, pleadings, orders and other court documents in numerical order and files them in respective dockets or case files.

    · Accepts cash bonds, appeals bonds and pleas of guilty; refunds bond money or re-distributes; maintains records of bond forfeitures.

    · Provides general information to the public, attorneys, and judges which may involve referring to calendars, indexes, case files, and trial or motion dockets; collects monies for fines.

    · Reviews driving records on computer.

    · Performs docketing such as posting uniform traffic citations, returns for witness subpoenas, summons, executions, etc., to case action summaries.

    · Prepares warrants for arrest, failure to appear, summons and subpoenas; prepares documents for settlement of outstanding warrants.

    · Enters into computer a variety of legal information such as court dockets, summons, subpoenas, notices, etc., and non-legal reports and trial dockets.

    · Assists judges in courts; provides information to attorneys concerning court rules and procedures; issues warrants and assists in preparing court docket.

    · Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.

    · Perform other duties as assigned or directed and be proactive.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of:

    · Federal, State and local laws, codes, ordinances, regulations and Departmental and City policies and procedures in area assigned.

    · Computers and applicable software; office practices, procedures, and equipment. Filing systems.

    · Principles and practices of public administration, operations, services and activities of a local government.

    Skills and Ability to:

    · Develop and use excel spreadsheets and formulas.

    · To learn and apply court procedures and rules relevant to the area of assignment.

    · Calculate and maintain accurate records; compile and prepare detailed reports.

    · Deal with sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and to maintain confidentiality.

    · Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.

    · Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.

    · Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.

    · Use tact, initiative, prudence and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines.

    · Prepare clear, accurate and concise reports, correspondence and other department materials.

    · Establish, maintain and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    · Follow Department and City policies and procedures operating with minimum supervision.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

    · Associate degree in Legal Studies, or Business Administration.

    · Any combination of experience and training equivalent to considerable experience in specialized court clerical work.

    · At least two (2) years of experience in a Municipal Court or criminal justice system.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    · Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License and acceptable MVR.

    · Must be able to be bonded.

    · Must successfully complete a minimum of twelve (12) hours Court Clerk training within one (1) year of placement in the position.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    The work is generally performed within an office environment. Requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, see, and effectively communicate with others for extended periods of time. Must be able to handle multiple tasks or projects simultaneously, work with numerous interruptions, and adjust to changing priorities. Must demonstrate good use of judgment and demonstrate the ability to properly deal with confidential matters. Must use good interpersonal skills and display professionalism at all times.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $34,000.00 - $38,000.00 per year
