Cost Accounting Manager ensures that costs for the company's products and services are allocated according to corporate procedures and in compliance financial accounting standards. Oversees the cost control systems, manages and interprets cost audits, and prepares cost accounting reports for presentation to top management. Being a Cost Accounting Manager gathers historical cost data (materials, labor, depreciation, operating expenses, etc.), to compare budgets with actual expenses. Manages the cost accounting staff to complete projects. Additionally, Cost Accounting Manager requires a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Typically reports to a Director. The Cost Accounting Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met, adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes.     In accordance with Assets, Inc. core values and mission, and under the supervision of the Finance Director, this position is responsible for the recording of all financial transactions in compliance with professional and governmental requirements as well as within the parameters established by the company policies.  The Accounting Manager is responsible for the supervision of accounts receivable personnel; monthly closing and reporting; balance sheet reconciliation and maintenance of current accounting system.

    This position may require de-escalating verbally or physically aggressive individuals according to identified procedures and individual client protocols.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Adheres to and demonstrates Assets, Inc. core values, mission, policies, procedures and compliance plan in the performance of all aspects of this position.
    2. Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned positions according to company policies and applicable laws.
    3. Coordinates accounting related functions performed by other staff to ensure accuracy, timeliness and compliance with accounting principles and procedures.
    4. With the Finance Director maintains the company's system of general ledger accounts and supervises recording of all transactions, including answering manager and staff questions and correcting errors. Add accounts sub accounts approved combinations.
    5. In conjunction with Finance Director oversees the monthly closing process including closing and balancing subsidiary ledgers, reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, and evaluation of activities for appropriate accruals.
    6. Backs-up to Finance Director in preparing monthly financial statements for reporting to the Board of Directors and management.
    7. Back-up to Payroll Administrator in all duties and performs tasks in their absence or as needed.
    8. Maintains accurate filing system of all Accounts Payable transactions including but not limited to invoices and backup documents.
    9. Prepares and mails out account statements to customers, including but not limited to monthly statements and past due invoices.
    10. Prepares overdue account reports for Assets’ Department Managers.
    11. Maintains and updates current accounting software and report software.
    12. Updates current Medicaid software to keep client information and service authorizations accurate.
    13. Maintains current customer information and enters new customers into current accounting software.
    14. Monitors compliance to department accounting systems and procedures and recommends revisions as needed. Performs internal audits.
    15. In cooperation with the Finance Director evaluates all accounting systems and functions for appropriate internal controls and documentation. Recommends, implements and changes documents as required.
    16. With guidance from the Finance Director this position will perform any duties within the Finance Department which may be needed. This may include General Ledger, Journal Entries, Financial Statements, A/R, Payroll, and Medicaid.
    17. Keeps abreast of current trends, practices, and developments in the profession and makes recommendations for implementation.
    18. Communicates with agencies outside of Assets to resolve billing issues or problems.
    19. Acts within the scope of authority and consistent with company objectives, guidelines, and policies.
    20. Maintains good working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, management and other company personnel.
    21. Maintains confidentiality at all times while displaying a professional disposition.
    22. Assists Finance Director in all duties and performs tasks in their absence or as needed.
    23. Other duties as assigned.
    24. Completes position required trainings. Attend company and departmental meetings as requested.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and/or Experience:

    • Must have at least a 2 year associate’s degree in Accounting.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from four-year college or university is preferred; and
    • Two (2) years of progressively responsible general accounting experience;
    • OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel.
    • Workable knowledge of Microsoft Access and accounting programs.

     

    Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

     

    Mathematical Skills:     Strong math, accuracy and precision skills. Strong quantitative and analytical skills. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

     

    Reasoning Ability:    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

     

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Valid Alaska driver’s license and insured vehicle or reliable means of transportation. Must be able to pass a criminal background check under state regulations. Must provide proof of educational credentials at time of hire.

    Desired Skills and Abilities

    1. Experience and/or good understanding of non-profit fund accounting.
    2. Knowledge of Medicaid and State granting processes.
    3. Experience with or knowledge of disability service system.
    4. Possess excellent problem solving and planning skills.
    5. Highly organized and detail oriented.
    6. Be able to work with individuals with Developmental Disabilities or Mental Illnesses.
    7. Be a team player.
    8. Effective communicator both orally and in writing.
    9. Computer proficiency with Excel, Word, Outlook, Access and Financial accounting systems.
    10. Be able to work with minimal supervision.
