  • Duties

    This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Office of the Secretary, Indian Arts and Crafts Board (IACB) located in Rapid City, South Dakota.

    At the full performance level GS-12 the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Manages the documentation, care, preservation, and use of the IACB collections, which are of significant historic, aesthetic, and monetary value.
    • Proposes and monitors collection policies and regulations regarding risk management, lending, conservation, access, storage, and compliance with applicable statutes.
    • Plans and coordinates the IACB's exhibition activities in consultation with the museum curators and IACB Director.
    • Plans, implements, and oversees a comprehensive museum education program for the IACB's museums.
    • Manages the security of collections, collection loan and exhibit policies, visitor admission fees, museum maintenance and utilities, and activities that enhance the visitors' overall museum experience.
    • Supervises a staff comprised of museum curators, museum technicians and museum aids who fulfill the mission of the IACB through exhibition activities and completion of day-to-day operations in the museums.
    • Provides technical input to the Director and Administrative Officer on an annual budget covering all administrative, operational, maintenance, and program activity requirements needed for the upcoming fiscal year for the IACB's museum program.
    • Researches and writes scholarly text about the IACB museum collections, as directed by the Director.
    The Office of the Secretary has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

    Physical Demands: The work requires mental alertness, better than average manual dexterity, and mobility. Although primarily sedentary, inspections and operations evaluations involve activities demanding a certain amount of exertion such as walking, climbing, crawling, lifting of heavy objects, bending, stooping, and reaching. Incumbent must have accurate color vision because of extensive involvement with the visual arts.

    NOTE: Occasional weekend work may be required.

    Salary Information
    GS-12:
    $86,962 - $113,047 per annum

    First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level.

    Minimum Qualification Requirements:
    To qualify for this position you must meet the (1) Basic Requirements AND (2) Specialized Experience for the series/grade to which you are applying.

    (1) Basic Education Requirement:
    All applicants must meet this Basic Requirement:

    A. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field;

    -OR-

    B. Combination of Education and Experience: courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education;

    -OR-

    C. Direct Experience: Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above.

    NOTE: You must submit your transcripts to show that you meet this requirement. Failure to submit your transcripts will result in an "Ineligible" rating.

    (2) Specialized Experience - Note: Education may not be substituted for experience at the GS-12 grade level and above.

    To qualify for the GS-12, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
    • Overseeing the care, maintenance, security, and overall management of museum collections; AND
    • Utilizing and training staff on collection management systems to collect and disseminate data pertaining to artifact collections in a museum; AND
    • Planning, implementing, and overseeing museum and education programs; AND
    • Collaboration with upper management on museum administrative operations, maintenance, and program activities
    MUST MEET ALL.

    Driver's License Requirement: You must have a valid driver's license because you will be required to operate government-owned or leased vehicles, and must adhere to all travel guidelines, and current motor vehicle laws.
