The Arlington County Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, Homeland Security Section is seeking a Crime Analysis Supervisor to lead and supervise a small team of Crime Analysts assigned to the Police Department. The Crime Analysis Unit provides data driven tools and resources to support the Department’s criminal investigative, tactical, strategic, and intelligence gathering work.
Specific duties include:
Performing the full range of supervisory duties including hiring, assigning work, leading, mentoring, conducting staff meetings, as well as evaluating and managing job performance to include establishing standards and guidelines of performance for section employees;
Overseeing the work of employees engaged in crime data collection, data analysis, and the dissemination of the information to stakeholders both within the agency and in the community and ensuring the team’s work is accurate, reliable, and adheres to standards and protocols;
Utilizing advanced methods and software to analyze various datasets to identify crime trends and series;
Providing analytical support in criminal investigations by deciphering and organizing technical datasets, to include online activity and phone records;
Preparing and presenting reports to departmental and county leadership to brief on trends or emerging issues;
Maintaining knowledge of best practices and recommending systems or procedural improvements to the Unit as well as to the department;
Maintaining proactive knowledge on advancements in crime analysis technology and tools, and recommending improvements or upgrades to enhance analytical capabilities;
Collaborating with County technology staff to ensure unit’s technology requirements are met; and
Collaborating with law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to develop strategic plans and initiatives based on data-driven insights and analysis.
The ideal candidate in this position should be able to operate autonomously and must be able to handle multiple responsibilities, challenges, tasks, changing priorities, and managing a team. They must be able to work with minimum supervision, maintain confidentiality of work products, and should demonstrate strong verbal and written communication abilities. They should also possess strong reading comprehension, arithmetic, problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills to maintain a positive and professional demeanor when interacting with the public, departmental personnel, and County staff.
Minimum:
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Mathematics, Geospatial Technology, or a related field that includes course work in Statistical Analysis; and
Significant experience in a law enforcement setting, working in Crime Analysis or a related field.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
Knowledge of statistical analysis software and crime analysis tools (e.g., cellular phone extraction software, ArcGIS, Cellebrite, Graykey, i2 Analyst’s Notebook, etc.);
Considerable skills, understanding, and experience utilizing GIS software and tools;
Knowledge of law enforcement procedures and responsibilities;
Experience using analytical skills to assess crime patterns and contextual data for ongoing criminal investigations; and/or
Any additional certifications in specialized software.
Driver's License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Background Check/Polygraph: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. A successful pre-employment polygraph examination conducted by the Police Department will also be required as a condition of employment.
Work Hours: Core work hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but a flexible work schedule and telework opportunities are available per supervisor approval.
