Computer Operations Supervisor supervises computer operations, acting as a team resource for guidance and support on complex or unusual issues. Implements policies and procedures to perform routine tasks to maintain computer equipment and its peripherals. Being a Computer Operations Supervisor continuously monitors the efficacy of computer operations, backup processes, system monitors, and server availability to ensure operation goals are met. Analyzes and records error messages to diagnose issues and works with impacted groups to provide a timely solution. Additionally, Computer Operations Supervisor recommends potential equipment upgrades to improve the capabilities of computer operations. Ensures computer operations activities meet pre-established production targets and maintain operating budgets. May require an associate degree in a related area. Typically reports to a manager. The Computer Operations Supervisor supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. To be a Computer Operations Supervisor typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Job Purpose/Summary: Responsible for overall operations of equipment and personnel in direct support of our shallow water fleet or other as directed. Requires operation of machinery, perform or direct maintenance/repairs of equipment specific to our fleet and fleet support needs, requires project management in scheduling repairs, cargo operations, and personnel deployment. Expect full seasonal deployment to the Prudhoe Bay region for duration of the normal maritime season, as well as locational support including maintenance and repair as needed where vessels are located. Coordinates activities with customers and vendors, requires ability to draft accurate budgets and manage expenditures in all cost accounts.


    Essential Functions:


    Operations Activities

    • Schedules and facilitates operations activity in direct support of the Port Captain and VP Planning and Business Development.
    • Coordinates activities with customers, service providers, and various vendors to minimize conflicts .
    • Responsible for providing daily / weekly status reports.
    • Completes company EIS, , JSA and Safety Observation/Near Miss paperwork, conducts operational audits, completes incident notifications as needed and investigations.
    • Works closely with our Business Operations Manager and Office Coordinator for logistics, travel, purchasing, budget planning, and accounting support.
    • Oversees Safe loading & operation of equipment on Tugs and Barges.

    Maintenance and Repair

    • Surveys equipment and drafts accurate maintenance and repair specifications.
    • Maintain & repair all equipment, tools and spare parts inventory.
    • Ensures materials and repair procedures meet regulatory standards and specifications.
    • Assists as owner’s representative during surveys and underwriters and during various periodic regulatory inspections.
    • Utilizes, supports, and executes our comprehensive preventative maintenance schedule and vessel management system.
    • Oversees and manages the maintenance and repair activities of personnel, vendors, and selected contractors.
    • Effectively communicates maintenance and repair plans and schedules with management.

    Budgeting and Cost Control

    • Estimates skills of required labor and materials necessary in projecting expenditures.
    • Assists in the formulation of annual budgets to vessel related cost centers, one and five year projections in support of the Port Captain’s requirements.
    • Oversee and control related expenditures in supply accounts: deck, engine and commissary stores.
    • Assists in full budget formulation and manages capital expense project improvements as needed.
    • Effectively communicates budget plans and expense explanations to management.

    Supervisory and Leadership of Direct Staff

    • Responsible for all matters of employment for direct staff including recruiting, training, development, promotion, discipline and termination.

    • Effectively communicates regional goals and objectives.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Must have technical skills in machinery, structural steel maintenance, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs.
    • Ability to work long and irregular hours during the season.
    • Knowledge of how to interpret technical data from blueprint drawings and manufacturers manuals.
    • Must be detailed oriented.
    • Must be able to meet the continuous high degree of productivity and execution of work demands.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concreate variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
    • Experience with developing budgets and familiarity with cost accounting.
    • Ability to interpret weather maps and forecasts to determine effect on operations and capabilities.
    • Ability to learn Barge Load Planning and complete Load Planning.
    • Requires good verbal and written skills to communicate with employees, supervisors, vendors and customers.
    • Organizational skills are required to manage multiple tasks concurrently and to prioritize critical tasks.
    • Ability to motivate employees and build effective teams to execute the requirements of the operation.
    • Intermediate skills with personal computers, including email, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and technical equipment like calculators, telephone, VHF radio, fax machine, copiers, satellite internet wireless LAN systems, etc.
    • Must be able to operate forklifts, company vehicle, front-end loaders, and use: technical manuals, micrometers, power tools, mechanics tools, multi meter, weather monitoring devices, and combustible gas indicators.

    Minimum Qualifications: Must have a minimum of 5 years experience in the maritime industry or comparable trade and 3 years supervisory experience. Ability to operate a vehicle with a manual transmission is required. Practical experience with industrial equipment, diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical power generation preferred. Familiarity with marine cargo operations, and proper securing and lashing techniques is necessary. Must have a valid driver’s license.


    Working Conditions: Approximately 50% of the work is conducted in a normal office environment; the remaining 50% is performed in the field around the vicinity of heavy equipment, with prolonged seasonal stays in regional offices. High noise levels exist, and hearing protection is required. Requires routine exposure to potentially hazardous airborne particles and chemical hazards, protective safety equipment must be used. Must be able to work at heights and handle stress in emergency situations. May be required to work more than a normal workweek due to seasonal requirements, which includes weekends. Travel will be required. Availability to work on a 24 hour around the clock basis in highly remote areas. Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.


    Physical/Mental Demands: Hand eye coordination is needed due to the requirement to work in the vicinity of and on rotating machinery, as well as transitional between moving tug and barge platforms over water. Night vision is required in locations that conduct seasonal work in predominately darkness. Depth perception is required on those occasions where operation of moving equipment is necessary. Requires the ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time, bend down to lower-level files, and reach overhead files. Must be able to stand and walk for up to six hours per day. Frequently lifting 50 pounds. The ability to climb ladders and over bulwarks. Ability to move between buildings, ascend/descend stairs and go outdoors in all kinds of weather.
