Child Life Specialist is responsible for the design and implementation of pediatric programs, therapies, and activities among young patients. Works with families to assist in caring for childhood hospitalizations or disabilities. Being a Child Life Specialist monitors child development to ensure normal progression. Provides in-depth care as needed to more urgent cases. Additionally, Child Life Specialist may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. To be a Child Life Specialist typically requires 0-2 years of related experience. Works on projects/matters of limited complexity in a support role. Work is closely managed.     Posting Specifics

    • Entry Rate: Based on experience.
    • Shift Details: Full-time (40 hrs/wk) Monday - Friday 6:30am-3:00pm. This position is direct patient care within the hospital.
    • Department: St George Regional Hospital Child Life St. George Regional Hospital has three full-time Certified Child Life Specialists positions within the Pediatric Unit, Emergency Department, and Same Day Surgery and one full-time Child Life Assistant. This position is for the Same Day Surgery unit.
    • Additional Information: Child life experience in a medical or hospital setting. A 600-hour Child Life Internship must be completed to be eligible for certification.
    • New grads will need to provide their internship completion certificate signed by their Intern supervisor to show incumbent has successfully completed their 600 hours prior to starting.
    • Previous Emergency Department, bereavement support and trauma experience in the Child Life field is preferred.

    Job Essentials

    • Accurately assesses, prioritizes, and documents pediatric patient and family care.
    • Develops, implements, and evaluates effective pediatric patient and family centered health care plans.
    • Provides developmentally-appropriate education, psychological procedural preparation, coping support, comfort management, and play opportunities, to pediatric patients and families.
    • Participates in selection, supervision, and training of practicum students and volunteers.
    • Assists with orienting, training and mentoring new employees.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.
    • Child Life Certification from Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) or eligible for Child Life Certification (to be obtained within 9 months of hire date). A 600-hour Child Life Internship must be completed to be eligible for certification.
    • Child life experience in a medical or hospital setting.
    • Computer experience in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases or similar applications.
    • Experience in Child Life Core Competencies which include but are not limited to: 1) Establishing supportive relationships 2) Meeting needs of child and family members, with a focus on social, emotional, and cognitive development. 3) Providing education to and communicating with children, families and team members 4) Providing coping support and comfort management 5) Guiding children in therapeutic play techniques 6) Ongoing assessment and written documentation of clinical care.
    • Successfully completed a 600-hour child life internship with completion documentation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree.
    • 1 year of Child Life work experience in a medical or hospital setting.
    • Spanish Speaking.
