Chief Nurse Anesthetist manages and schedules Nurse Anesthetists who plan, arrange and secure necessary anesthesia equipment. Aids Anesthesiologist in organizing courses of instruction for students, and partakes in resulting programs and demonstrations. Being a Chief Nurse Anesthetist prepares reports and compiles data dealing with specific anesthesia, drugs and techniques, and patients' reactions to them. Requires a master's degree. Additionally, Chief Nurse Anesthetist requires Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Chief Nurse Anesthetist typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.       • The Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for providing anesthesia to and/or monitoring of the patient.
    • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
      • Education: Graduate of accredited registered nursing program and a graduate of AANA accredited program for Nurse Anesthetist.
      • Experience: N/A
      • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current license in Minnesota to practice as a Registered Nurse; Registered Nurse license in the State of Wisconsin if assigned to Anesthesia Outreach; must complete and pass a qualifying examination/certification as CRNA within one (1) year of hire.

        BLS Certification with a designation of either BLS Provider or Healthcare Provider from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or Military Training Network.

        ACLS and PALS certifications upon hire.

        Nurse Anesthetists employed as of 10/01/2014 must obtain NRP certification by 10/01/2015. Nurse Anesthetists hired after 10/02/2014 must obtain NRP certification within one (1) year of hire.

    • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
      • Knowledgeable in anesthesia machines; work well with MDs, MDAs, CRNAs, Anesthesia Assistant, Anesthesia Attendant, Surgery and PACU personnel and other Hospital departments. Ability to communicate orally and written. Maintain good physical and mental health; maintain professional quality and appearance; punctuality. Assign work load to CRNAs; trouble shoot equipment problems; order equipment and supplies as needed; assist with policies/procedures, budget, etc.; attend meetings as necessary. Work with MDAs, CRNAs and PACU as needed; work with Vice President of Patient Services, Director of Surgical Services and Chief of Anesthesiology.

        READING - Advanced: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquires or complaints.
      • WRITING - Intermediate: Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, or procedures.
      • SPEAKING - Intermediate: Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group situations or before groups of customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
      • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Intermediate Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw or interpret bar graphs to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
      • REASONING ABILITY - Intermediate Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
