    The Director of Wellness and Recreation is responsible for the overall administration, leadership, and management of all university wellness and recreation initiatives. The Director of Campus Wellness and Recreation is responsible for the oversight of the direction management, and planning for all recreation operations, business, financial services, and programming. The Director plans, develops, and manages an annual budget including revenue from facility and equipment rentals, membership sales, special events, and operations. The Director will provide overall vision, planning, and strategic direction of the wellness and recreation program. In collaboration with campus partners, the Director plays a vital role in creating, developing, and promoting Recreation programs and services that support and foster a strong and active culture of wellness at Lincoln University.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Plans, develops, and manages an annual budget, revenue from facility and equipment rentals, membership sales, special events, and retail operations.
    • Develop and direct programmatic or department policies pertaining to recreation programs and services, ensuring that both the department and staff are current with necessary certifications, training, and policies related to safety and potential risk issues related to liability.
    • Current knowledge of State and Federal regulations and industry standards (NIRSA) related to liability and risk associated with recreational programs and facilities.
    • Knowledge of shared usage practices and priorities between facilities, programs, and services (recreation, athletics).
    • Exceptional communication skills including ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence; ability to interact effectively with many levels of personnel.
    • Experience managing facilities.
    • Staff Development - Includes work on committees and assignments that enable the staff members to stretch and grow, along with formal, informal coaching, mentoring, and regular training, including conference attendance.
    • Commitment to gender equity and diversity.
    • Participates with other higher-level managers to establish campus strategic plans and objectives.
    • Represents the organizational unit in campus-wide and system-wide meetings and discussions. Interacts and provides solutions with higher-level management on controversial situations, customer negotiations, or influencing and persuading other high-level managers.
    • Directs the strategic planning process for Campus Wellness and Recreational; establishes the vision and direction for the organization, leads the development and implementation of long-term strategies to meet the needs and objectives of stakeholders. Actively engages and develops internal and external support to execute/activate the vision.
    • Ability to articulate the defined vision of fitness and wellness within a university setting.
    • Plans, designs, influences, and implements recreational sports programs and services.
    • Ability to work with and communicate effectively with colleagues from across campus, student, representatives, and campus departments in reviewing established procedures, discussion improvements, solving problems, and following through with implementing solutions.
    • Experience working with student organizations, including student advisory boards and student governments, and knowledge of student development theories and concepts.
    • Knowledge of characteristics, lifestyles, and interests of college students.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to appropriately exercise independent judgement, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, patience and to successfully interact with diverse public, academic, staff, and student populations via written forms, social media, e-communication, and in person.
    • Interpersonal skills to work effectively and establish collaborative working relationships with persons from diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels within and outside the university, with sensitivity to cultural and act persuasively in sensitive situations, skills in conflict management techniques. Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards.
    • The Director collaborates with university leaders and departments, advocating for the present and future health, wellness, and recreation needs of the campus.
    • The Director serves on campus-wide committees and tasks forces, participates in professional associations, and provides a learning-centered environment for students and employees.
    • Cultivating a culture of assessment, innovation and national prominence in collegiate recreational sports, fitness, and wellness is a foundational priority.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration, Business Administration, Sports Management, Higher Education, or closely related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
    • First Aid/CPR Certification within first 90 days of employment.
    • At least 3-5 years of progressive leadership/management experience directing aspects of recreation programs or university departments.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience directing recreation programs in a university setting.
    • Valid national certification for Aerobics and Fitness Instruction (e.g. AFFA, ACSM, ACE, NCSA).
    • Master's degree in Recreation Administration, Business Administration, Sports Management, Higher Education, or a closely related field.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Personal Characteristics

    • Current knowledge of State and Federal regulations and industry standards (NIRSA) related to liability and risk associated with recreational programs and facilities.
    • Knowledge of shared usage practices and priorities between facilities, programs, and services (recreation, athletics).
    • Knowledge of basic principles of supervision and administration.
    • Experience managing facilities.
    • Ability to prepare and manage budgets in compliance with University, Lincoln University Board of Curators policy.
    • Ability to effectively listen, work and communicate with all levels of employees and students.
    • Ability to effectively plan for and manage programs and events.
    • Monitoring/Assessing performance of themselves, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and campus stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
    • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
    • Must be self-started and demonstrate initiative without direct supervision.

    Physical Demands

    • Ability to sit at a workstation or stand for extended periods.
    • Occasional ability to lift, carry, and put away parcels weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Normal physical mobility, which includes movements from place to place on the job taking distance and speed into account.
