May require POST(Peace Office Standards and Training) certification. Typically reports to Police Supervisor. The Campus Police Officer occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Duties Summary:
    Performs a variety of law enforcement, crime prevention, investigative or other specialized duties of a trainee police officer and/or under general supervision performs supportive, sub professional police work; and performs other related duties as required.

    Distinguishing characteristics:
    This class represents the entry level class for the Police Officer series. It involves formal and informal training in the basic principles, practices, methods and techniques of police work under general supervision requiring some judgment in carrying out and explaining laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures involving occasional responsible personal contact. Work assignments are made concurrently with orientation and training and continued guidance and instructions are provided during the assignment.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

    Attends police recruit training sessions; receives on-the-job training by accompanying experienced police officers on patrols; performs a variety of law enforcement duties under supervision of a higher level police officer such as walking a beat, enforcing traffic and parking regulations; assisting in traffic and criminal investigations, assisting in preparing reports; familiarizes self with rules and regulations, operating procedures, special and general orders, etc.; directs traffic; prepares or assists in the preparation of standard reports, maintaining operational logs and other receiving desk duties in support of patrol activities; books suspects and sees that they are fingerprinted and photographed; processes arrest reports; serves warrants, subpoenas and penal summonses; performs driver licensing examining and related duties; handles complaints over the desk and telephone; prepares and types court calendars for district court; transports prisoners in patrol wagons; may operate radio communications equipment in transmitting and receiving messages; provides information and assistance to the general public; issues citations; performs jail duties; administers first aid; may perform undercover work; may testify in court; may make arrests and interview witnesses, victims and suspects.Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.

    License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).

    Knowledge of: the economic, social and racial composition of the community; the geography of the County of Maui.

    Ability to: learn and explain laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and departmental policies; learn police principles, practices, methods and techniques; follow oral and written instructions; deal courteously but firmly with the general public; keep records and prepare simple reports; operate various office and other equipment and appliances.

    Special Working Conditions: irregular hours and exposure to hazards.

    Health and Physical Condition:

    Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

    Age Requirement: All candidates for employment as a Police Officer I shall be at least 20 years of age.

    Physical Effort Grouping: Special

    Distance vision:  20/20 binocular vision, with or without correction.
    Vision correction by soft contact lenses.  Soft contact lens wearers must have 20/200 or better binocular vision before correction, corrected to 20/20.  Applicants must provide certification that he/she has successfully worn soft contact lenses for the past 12 months.  Vision correction by other than soft contact lenses (e.g., glasses, hard contact lenses, semi-rigid contact lenses). Wearers must have 20/40 or better binocular vision before correction, corrected to 20/20. SKILLS ASSESSMENT:
    Qualified applicants will be required to take an online assessment.  Applicants are required to test alone in a quiet, distraction-free area using a reliable computer with a high-speed internet connection, a microphone, a webcam (internal or external), and a Windows or Apple Operating System.  Applicants who do not meet the system requirements will be provided an opportunity to take the online assessment on site.
