Environmental Scientist III - Wildlife Damage Biologist

    Summary Statement

    This position will work to resolve human conflicts with wildlife. Specifically, the position will work with landowners and farmers to better manage deer and reduce crop damage on their properties. This will involve farm-specific inspections, evaluations, and consultations while implementing the Division's crop damage assistance programs. Duties will include performing technical reviews of deer crop damage permit applications, preparing associated permits, performing technical review of farm deer management plans and providing recommendations to farmers to reduce crop damage. This position will also be involved with oversight of the State's Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator program, nuisance beaver control program, and the Delaware Hunter's Against Hunger venison donation program.

    Preferred Qualification

    Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met. Masters degree or higher in wildlife biology or closely related field. Six months experience in deer management.

    Essential Functions

    Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations. Performs statistical analysis of data. Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations. Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents. Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

    Job Requirements

    JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field. Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met. Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data. Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data. Six months experience in technical report writing.
