The successful candidate reports directly to the Head Athletic Trainer.Located in Staunton, VA, Mary Baldwin University recently grew from college to university status reflecting its growing range of bachelor’s, master level, and doctoral programs. The University has nearly doubled its undergraduate enrollment in the last four years and reported record-breaking enrollment for the 2020-21 academic year. MBU is a very diverse entrepreneurial institution with a record of innovation aspiring to meet the evolving higher education needs of society.The successful candidate will assist in all facets of the athletic training program for MBU’s 15-sport NCAA Division III athletics program, including:

    • Perform as Certified Athletic Trainer under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer and team physician in managing the work-related health care of student-athletes. Such care includes, but is not limited to first aid/emergency care, on site injury evaluation, application of appropriate modalities, developing and implementing rehabilitation and prevention programs, as well as conducting rehabilitation and making medical referrals for all NCAA varsity and emerging sports.
    • Assist in the engagement, development and management of the medical training of staff, including if and as applicable, graduate assistant and student athletic trainers
    • Serve as a clinical preceptor for athletic training students from James Madison University and Bridgewater College
    • Provide sport coverage for practices and games, which may require travel; must be available for treatment prior to and following practices and contests
    • Sport assignments will be designated by the Head athletic trainer
    • Travel requirements will be dictated by the Head Athletic Trainer, and will include travel to all conference contests for team sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball)
    • Coordinate with visiting teams to supply athletic training needs
    • Assist in COVID testing for student-athletes, staff, and officials
    • Work in conjunction with the University’s Strength and Conditioning designee(s) to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition and conditioning programs customized to meet individual needs
    • Assist in ordering and maintaining inventory supplies and clinical equipment
    • Maintain a positive athletic training room culture
    • Incorporate new methods and techniques arising from the ever-changing field of sports medicine
    • Comply with all NATA, NCAA and athletic conference medical policies, protocol and operations manual, as well as with all applicable employment policies and laws
    • Assist in coordinating and scheduling physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes to determine their ability to compete
    • Supervise any graduate assistant athletic trainers, athletic training students and work study students, if and as applicable
    • Counsel players with regards to dietary needs, nutritional supplements and NCAA banned substances
    • Assist with drug testing for the athletic department
    • Maintain complete and accurate up to date student-health and participation records in the electronic medical record system
    • Electronically document first report of injury, student-athlete treatments, and return to play dates
    • Maintain daily treatment rehabilitation logs
    • Communicate on a regular basis with the Head Athletic Trainer and team physician regarding injury reports and updates, as well as the coaching staff
    • Initiate and collaborate internally on insurance claims for student athlete injuries as a result of their participation in NCAA athletics
    • Coordinate medical referrals and serve as a liaison between student athletes, physicians, coaches, parents and school administrators
    • Demonstrate and apply interpersonal skills required to work effectively with student athletes, coaches, and other team personnel and staff
    • Participate in community service/educational programs related to sports medicine
    • Willingness to participate in or lead on-campus research in areas of specialization
    • Serve as a mandated reporter for all student conduct issues and report such information accordingly
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. BOC Athletic Training Certification. CPR and AED certifications as well as a Virginia license for Athletic Training or be eligible to obtain the state license. Candidates must have strong organizational skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively within the athletic department and throughout the University community. Strong oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of and commitment to NCAA Division III rules. Valid driver’s license and ability to establish driver eligibility under the University’s Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy. The successful candidate must pass all required background and reference checks.Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree. Previous experience in collegiate athletics.
