Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. **Key Responsibilities:**
- Provide daily care for our shelter animals, including feeding, grooming, and basic medical treatment.
- Clean and disinfect kennels and facilities to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
- Assist with animal intake, processing, and adoptions, offering excellent customer service to the public.
- Observe animals for signs of illness or injury and assist with administering medications.
- Help with animal transport.
- Perform various clerical duties, including data entry and answering phone calls.
**Qualifications:**
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must enjoy working with animals and be comfortable handling them.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a background check/drug test.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage stress and handle the emotional aspects of working in an animal shelter.
- Physical ability to lift heavy objects or animals (up to 50 pounds) and perform strenuous activities.
- Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
**Work Environment:**
- Exposure to potential hazards associated with blood, infected animals, and unknown animal behaviors.
- Frequent work in outside weather conditions and occasionally in high, precarious places.
- Moderate to loud noise levels.
