Animal Scientist conducts research, and analyzes and experiments on the selection, breeding, feeding, management, and marketing of animals. Determines and evaluates their applications to scientific study. Being an Animal Scientist requires a degree in animal science. May be expected to have an advanced degree in area of specialty with 0-2 years of experience. Additionally, Animal Scientist has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision.     Animal Caregiver Qualifications:


    Location:

    • All of our animal caregivers are required to live within a 45-minute radius of the sanctuary. This ensures that we can provide the best care possible to our animals at all times.


    Experience:

    • Previous experience of working with farm animals is often preferred.
    • Experience in animal care or husbandry, especially with large animals such as cows, pigs, goats, and chickens, is beneficial.


    Knowledge:

    • Understanding of animal behavior, nutrition, and health.
    • Familiarity with the specific needs and characteristics of farm animals.


    Physical Fitness:

    • The ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying 50 lb bags of feed, cleaning animal enclosures, and providing hands-on care to animals.
    • You are required to be able to work in all weather conditions that are deemed safe.


    Compassion and Empathy:

    • A genuine love for animals and a strong commitment to their well-being.
    • Ability to handle animals with care and patience.


    Communication Skills:

    • Clear and reliable communication with team members, volunteers, and sometimes visitors to the sanctuary.
    • Ability to follow and give instructions regarding animal care protocols.


    Problem-Solving Skills:

    • The ability to identify and address potential health issues or behavioral concerns in animals.


    Teamwork:

    • Collaboration with other caregivers, volunteers, board members, founders, and sanctuary staff.
    • Willingness to work within a team environment to ensure the best care for the animals.


    Initiative:

    • Proactive approach to tasks and a willingness to take on responsibilities as needed.
    • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the best interest of the animals.


    Animal Caregiver Responsibilities:


    Animal Health and Welfare:

    • Provide daily care, feeding, and watering for all animals in the sanctuary, ensuring their nutritional and dietary needs are met.
    • Monitor the health of animals and promptly report any signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes to the supervisor or veterinary staff.
    • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian and maintain accurate records of medical interventions.


    Habitat Maintenance:

    • Maintain clean and hygienic living spaces for the animals, including stalls, pens, and enclosures with the highest standards set by the Animal Care Manager.
    • Regularly clean and sanitize water and feeding containers to ensure a healthy environment.
    • Perform regular maintenance tasks such as mucking stalls, changing bedding, and repairing fences or enclosures as needed.


    Enrichment and Socialization:

    • Develop and implement enrichment activities that promote mental stimulation and natural behaviors for the animals.
    • Provide socialization and companionship to animals through gentle interactions, grooming, and playtime.
    • Monitor and manage animal interactions to prevent conflicts and ensure the safety of both animals and staff.


    Emergency Response:

    • Act swiftly and calmly during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, accidents, or animal escapes, following established protocols.
    • Collaborate with other team members to ensure all animals' and staff's safety and well-being.
    • In case of an emergency or low-staff scenario, we may need to request a Caregiver to be present unexpectedly. However, please rest assured that we will take all necessary precautions to avoid such situations whenever possible.


    Assist with Events and Fundraising:

    • Participate in on-site events, workshops, and fundraising activities to promote the sanctuary's mission and raise awareness.
    • Engage with donors and supporters, sharing stories and updates about the animals.
    • Guiding the public on exciting tours.


    Other Responsibilities:

    • Keeping track of inventory and making sure we have everything we need by ordering supplies when necessary.
    • Scheduling appointments with veterinarians for the residents.
    • Ensure that the sheds are maintained in a state of cleanliness and hygiene that is consistent with the highest standards set by the sanctuary’s founders.
