Actuarial Fellow utilizes statistical analysis and modeling to assess and manage risk and estimate financial outcomes. Compiles, prepares, and analyzes data to develop statistical models, probability tables, and actuarial studies and evaluate the likelihood and financial impact of various risks. Being an Actuarial Fellow assists with product design and development by analyzing risk groups and calculating appropriate insurance rates, premium levels, and rating systems and structures. Records and tracks accruals, claims, and settlements and prepares documents for input into regulatory filings, financial budgets, forecasts, and other financial projections. Additionally, Actuarial Fellow applies knowledge of mathematics, probability, statistics, principles of finance and business to calculations in life, health, social, and casualty insurance, annuities, and pensions. Requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Fellow of Society of Actuaries (FSA). Typically reports to a manager. To be an Actuarial Fellow typically requires 12+ years of related experience. Achievement and depth of knowledge of specialization or field is the main differentiator. Advisory role on complex and challenging projects and initiatives.     Department:     Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC)

    Reports To:       Supervising Attorney

    General Functions:

    The Law Fellow works in close partnership with Alaska Native Justice Center Staff Attorneys, Paralegals, Advocate Case Managers and Tribal Court Facilitators. Under the direction of ANJC’s Legal team, The Law Fellow assists and provides comprehensive and high-quality legal services to Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC) clients. The Law Fellow may have the opportunity to participate in strategic coordination with state-wide teams and participate in appellate and impact litigation. The Law Fellow will support ANJC in representing Alaska Tribes in child welfare matters that implicate the Indian Child Welfare Act, provide technical assistance and training to tribal justice systems, and provide civil legal services to primarily Alaska Native and American Indian victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, dating violence and stalking.

    Duties and Responsibilities: 

    • Identify and participate in a goal setting process to determine learning objectives.
    • Conduct legal research and writing and prepare legal documents.
    • Prepare for hearings or trials, including document preparation, appearance and assistance at hearings.
    • Meet with clients to gather information, assess legal options, provide court accompaniment, and provide timely emergency legal assistance services.
    • Collaborate with staff to promote client education and safety.
    • Maintain confidential files.
    • Interact and engage effectively with a variety of personalities and situations requiring sound judgment.
    • Attendance at conferences and workshops as directed and approved.  
    • Network with other service providers to stay abreast of ongoing efforts related to ANJC services.
    • Participate in pro bono clinics and ANJC outreach efforts.
    • Provide information as requested for grant and fund reporting.
    • Perform special projects as directed.
    • Assist in implementing strategies that advance ANJC’s public policy objectives, including researching legislation and proposed regulations, drafting public comments, and obtaining written support from other organizations.
    • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

    Job Specifications:

    • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, draft and revise legal documents.
    • Demonstrated ability to produce succinct, well-written memoranda, reports, and analyses.
    • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and projects in various stages and to meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrated familiarity with Alaska Rules of Court and State Statutes.
    • Superior oral and written communication skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and public contact skills; ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff; exhibit a professional manner in dealing with others.
    • Excellent organizational skills. 
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to think strategically and exercise good judgment. 
    • Ability to work independently as well as on a team and with minimal supervision.
    • Proficient in the use of computers and relevant software.
    • Ability to identify needed social and community services; make appropriate referrals, and advocate for client services, while maintaining interagency relationships.
    • Travel to both rural and urban areas may be required.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Juris Doctor degree.
    • Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.
    • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:
    • Experience working with victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking, including laws governing their rights, protections, and remedies.
    • Experience and knowledge in Alaska Native legal issues, Indian Child Welfare Act, Child in Need of Aid, ANCSA, and Native law.
    • Knowledge of tribal, state, and federal relations.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.
    • Active member of the Alaska Bar Association.

    Physical Requirements: 

    • Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
